Venom

~Flicker flicker~

My scales glisten in the moonlight
as I lay, patiently waiting.
Tongue flickering in and out of my mouth,
tasting the air for the slightest hint of prey.
My eyes are not fixed on a particular spot.
I just look ahead, lazily, dreamily,
as the day's warmth slowly turns into a comfortable chill.

~Flicker flicker~

I take in a cool, fresh breath of air
as a gentle breeze flows over my body.
I can feel the vibration of the wind
in the leaves above me, the soft grass in which I lay.
I yawn...unsheathing my fangs as I stretch out my jaws.

~Flicker flicker~

Twilight...so calm, so peaceful...
so inviting to others completely unaware of my presence.
I'm an apex predator, unchanged for millions of years.
Some may think me an evil creature.
I see the look of primal fear in their eyes
when they cross my path.
Everyone except children.
They seem fascinated, driven by wonder and curiosity.

~Flicker flicker~

I can feel something moving,
sending out waves, undulating
through the ground on which I lay.

~Flicker flicker~

I taste the smell of warm flesh.
I feel you slowly emerge out from under the lush foliage,
where you seek your refuge.
The hot outline of your body burns an image inside my brain.

~Flicker flicker~

I can see you now.
Two black beady eyes,
a nose, pink and pointed,
never ceasing to twitch those long whiskers.
Cute, little rounded ears,
tiny feet that carry you quietly through the woods.
Not quiet enough.

~Flicker flicker~

You're moving closer to me,
unaware of the imminent danger
that patiently waits for the perfect moment
to STRIKE.

~Flicker flicker~

So close now...
I can almost touch you with my tongue.
Slowly, I bring my coils tighter around myself,
positioning my head just above my body.

~Flicker flicker~

It's almost time...just be still. You won't know what hit you.
I lunge forward like a bolt of lightning, exposing my fangs,
piercing down through your tender white fur like hypodermic needles,
delivering my VENOM. Feet jerking frantically as poison courses
through your frail body, causing your own blood to congeal inside your veins.
Your nerve response is damaged.
Even if you could run, you wouldn't know how.
Retracting my fangs from your flesh, I watch in delight as you convulse, as your breathing
becomes more shallow with every passing second, your body going rigid as the blood,
like concrete, hardens in your veins.

You will soon be paralyzed as death looms all around you,
waiting to give you it's final kiss.

~Flicker flicker~

I taste your fear. Opening my mouth to unhinge my jaws, I lock my fangs around your head.
Slowly, I move my jaws from side to side, pulling you deeper and deeper into me.
My muscles moving in synchronous waves force your body down into my throat.
All that remains is your tail as I continue to swallow you alive.
Almost finished now. I stretch out my neck taking in the last of you,
still coercing your body deeper into mine.
Ahhh, a nice big yawn, big stretch, as I reset my jaws,
tucking my fangs against the roof of my mouth.

What a serene calm. Everything is so quiet, so peaceful.
Nobody heard a sound as I indulged myself, a fuzzy little mouse.

~Flicker flicker~

I'm sleepy now. One last gratifying yawn, I can now rest,
coils wrapped comfortably around coils.
I rest my head on my body, taking in a cool, fresh breath of air
as a gentle breeze flows over me.

Sleepy, satisfied, I enter into a state of dreams...
My scales glisten in the moonlight as I lay in slumber,
dreaming about tomorrow.
